The Story Behind This Design

The Taíno people were the first inhabitants of Puerto Rico, long before European arrival. Their connection to nature, family, and community remains an important part of Puerto Rican identity today.

This nativity brings together two important traditions: the universal story of the birth of Jesus and the enduring legacy of Puerto Rico’s Indigenous roots. By placing the Holy Family within a Taíno-inspired bohío, this design celebrates faith while honoring the island’s earliest culture in a respectful and artistic way.

It is a reminder that the Christmas message of hope, peace, and love belongs to every people and every culture.

A Holiday Tradition to Treasure

For many Puerto Rican families, Christmas is a season that extends well beyond December 25, continuing through Día de los Reyes (Three Kings Day) on January 6. This handcrafted nativity is designed to become part of those cherished family traditions—displayed year after year and shared across generations.

Did You Know?

The bohío was the traditional home of the Taíno people, the Indigenous inhabitants of Puerto Rico and much of the Caribbean before European contact. Constructed from natural materials such as wood and palm leaves, the bohío represented family, shelter, and community. Incorporating this architectural style into the nativity creates a meaningful connection between Puerto Rico’s Indigenous history and the timeless Christmas story.
